Position: Zoo Veterinary Technician
Department: Veterinary Medicine
Reports to: Head Zoo Veterinarian

Job Summary:
The Zoo Veterinary Technician assists in providing medical care to a variety of animals within the zoo facility. This role involves assisting the veterinary team in all aspects of animal healthcare, including examination, treatment, surgery, and general animal husbandry. The Zoo Veterinary Technician works closely with the veterinary team to ensure the well-being and overall health of the zoo's animal population.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Assisting the veterinary team in conducting medical examinations and procedures on a wide range of zoo animals.
2. Participating in the administration of medications, vaccinations, and treatments as directed by the veterinary team.
3. Assisting with surgical procedures, including pre-operative preparations, anesthesia monitoring, and post-operative care.
4. Maintaining accurate and detailed medical records for all animals in the zoo's care.
5. Providing assistance during diagnostic procedures, such as radiography, ultrasonography, and laboratory testing.
6. Monitoring and assessing the health and behavior of animals on a regular basis.
7. Assisting in the implementation of preventive healthcare programs, including parasite control and vaccination schedules.
8. Collaborating with the veterinary team to develop and improve animal care protocols and guidelines.
9. Conducting routine health checks and reporting any abnormalities or concerns to the veterinary team promptly.
10. Assisting in the maintenance and cleanliness of veterinary facilities and equipment.
11. Educating and providing guidance to zoo staff and volunteers regarding animal handling and restraint techniques.
12. Participating in the training and supervision of veterinary nursing students and interns.

Qualifications and Skills:
1. Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Nursing or equivalent qualification.
2. Valid certification or license as a Veterinary Technician.
3. Minimum of 3 years of experience working as a Veterinary Technician in a zoo or similar animal care environment.
4. Strong knowledge of veterinary nursing principles and practices.
5. Proficient in administering medications, injections, and other treatments to animals.
6. Experience in assisting with surgical procedures and anesthesia monitoring.
7. Excellent record-keeping skills and attention to detail.
8. Knowledge of diagnostic techniques, including radiography and laboratory testing.
